KOTA KINABALU: Two men have been arrested in connection with the robbery and rape of a teenage girl in the east coast of Tawau district.

The suspects, aged 33 and 39, were nabbed in Kampung Kurnia Jaya on Tueday night, three days after they allegedly raped the girl at least four times at a cocoa plantation in Jalan Sin Onn.

The suspects, who included an ex-convict, are being detained for questioning, said Tawau district police chief Supt Ramli Ali Mat. He said initial police investigation found that the teenager had mistakenly flagged down a van driven by one of the suspects as a mini-bus while she was on her way to church in Apas Road on Saturday evening.

The second suspect, who was sitting behind, put a knife to her neck and demanded money, Supt Ramli said, adding that the girl, who did not have a purse with her, was forced to give up her gold rings.

The suspect then ordered her to take off her clothes but she struggled and pleaded with the driver to stop the vehicle.

Instead, they took her to the plantation and gang-raped her.

They later dropped her off near Wisma Rastamas where she quickly put on her clothes before informing her family, who helped her to lodge a police report.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said there were concerns about of such cases, especially after the recent abduction and brutal rape of a university student in Kota Kinabalu.

“We are worried about copycats, we want ensure that these culprits don’t remain on the streets,” he told reporters here. - Source
